Model Based Continuous Engineering: How to Reduce Overhead and Increase Value of MBE

Michael Masin, IBM

Abstract:

Despite many advantages of Model Based Engineering (MBE) companies are still having difficulties with its application. The main reasons for that are the initial effort required for training and reorganization of work processes to fit the new schema, modeling overhead in each project, and sometimes unclear benefits for the system designers and project managers. In this talk I describe recent and ongoing projects at IBM Research whose main purpose is to reduce overhead and increase value of MBE. The common theme of all these projects is Continuous Engineering - how to seamlessly build, apply and transfer models throughout system’s lifecycle, from the definition of system requirements through architectural optimization and project management to manufacturing and operations.
